Papers Agree to Gay Ads

SEATTLE, WA-After years of refusing to publish advertising using the word "gay," this city's two daily newspapers, under pressure from the Gay Community Center, have changed their policies.

Both the Seattle Times and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer agreed to print the Center's ad for its gay Jobline-Survival employment counseling service after Center representatives informed the papers that they planned to file a complaint with the City Office of Women's Rights, which is charged with enforcing gay clauses in the City's fair employment practices ordinance.

Literature Becoming Liberal

LEXINGTON PARK, MD-"Periodical literature appears to be encouraging its readership to be more accepting of homosexuality," Dr. Paul Cameron, a St. Mary's College instructor, concluded after a study of articles indexed in the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature.

Cameron studied articles indexed under "homosexuality" between 1921 and 1971.

Between 1922-31 there were only two articles on homosexuality listed, Cameron found, but in the period between 1962-71. there were 132.

Cameron said he used the Reader's Guide index because "it's drawn up by persons not involved with the issue of homosexuality and constitutes a listing of the 'significant' and popular, in terms of readership."

CIVIL RIGHTS

Rape Law Would Strike Sodomy

LINCOLN, NE-This state's unicameral legislative body is considering a penal code reform bill titled the "Sexual Assault (Rape) Bill" (LB 23) containing a clause which would repeal the state sodomy statute. The bill is being opposed by the Christian Law Institute, which has labeled LB 23 the "Child Victimization Act of 1975." Nebraskans are urged to write to their state senators at the State Capitol Building, Lincoln, NE 68509.

Adoption Reform Proposed

SACRAMENTO, CA-Assemblyman Jim Keysor (D-San Fernando) introduced a bill which would end discrimination against single people in adoption procedures.

Present regulations state that applications for adoption may be accepted from single people when two-parent families cannot be found to meet the needs of particular children.

The Keysor bill (AB 716) would require licensed public and private adoption agencies to accept applications from single people on the same basis as applications are accepted from twoparent families and without regard to the number of two-parent families that are available for placement. It would also prohibit giving preference to two-parent families in the placement of children for adoption. Assemblyman Keysor's address is: 309 S. Maclay Ave., San Fernando, CA 91340.
